diaCRITICS in the Year of the Earth Dog

We welcome Tết and the Lunar New Year (Year of the Earth Dog) by launching a new phase of diaCRITICS. Our publisher and founder, Viet Thanh Nguyen, will hand over the managing editorship of diaCRITICS to Dao Strom, who has been a contributing writer and literary series editor for Out of the Margins, since 2011. Viet talks about that decision in this interview.

diaCRITICS will be much the same as our readers have previously found it, but also more, as there continues to be always more – new books, art, films, events and news from the diaspora – to report on. A few new aspects to look forward to with diaCRITICS in the new year:

~ We are happy to announce we’ve been invited to be a “channel” of the Los Angeles Review of Books. The LARB Channels are a community of wholly independent online magazines specializing in fiction, poetry, literary criticism, politics, science, religion, and culture, supported by the Los Angeles Review of Books, which is a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting and disseminating rigorous, incisive, and engaging writing on every aspect of literature, culture, and the arts. You can find diaCRITICS on their website and follow the LARB Channels on Twitter.

~ Artist & Cultural Profiles: We’ve done this before, of course, but we’re going to make an even more dedicated effort to profile diasporic artists with voices and visions we think you should know about. The Vietnamese diasporic arts community is only getting bigger and more active. We’ll feature mini-profiles on visual artists, writers, hybrid artists, and more, from time to time.

~ We’ll continue to re-cap news items and stories from the diaspora and in Vietnam. You can count on seeing these weekly news posts once to twice a month.

~ Please also follow diaCRITICS on Twitter and social media (we’ve just started here!) … We’ll tweet about diaCRITICS posts as well as other news and events from Vietnamese and diasporic communities, and events of the Diasporic Vietnamese Artists Network (DVAN), our parent organization. There is strength in numbers and in solidarity — please connect with us in these places and help us build up this network of voices and community together!

(An FYI also to keep an eye out for the Kickstarter fundraising campaign DVAN will be launching in coming weeks—this will help to fund new diasporic arts and cultural activities in 2018 and beyond!)

CALL FOR WRITERS & CONTRIBUTING EDITORS:

diaCRITICS is adding contributing writers from all over the diaspora, and we would love to hear from you. We are especially interested in hearing from (and about) Vietnamese and Southeast Asian diasporic writers, artists, and artist communities in other countries (than just the U.S.). This can mean many types of art — literary, visual, performance, film, hybrid, multimedia, social practice — as well cultural organizations and other unique happenings. If you have eyes or ears or thoughts on things happening in your region and you’d like to write about it – a review, a reflection, a nonfiction essay – please contact us.

We also accept original creative work — poems, short stories, essays, video poems, visual or multimedia art that can be viewed online. Visit our About page for further guidelines.

Happy Lunar New Year, Chúc Mừng Năm Mới!
