Upcoming Events: Refugee Poetics & She Who Has No Master(s)

Look for these events in May, centering diaspora and poetry on East and West Coasts.

Center for Refugee Poetics – Philadephia, PA

Currently there’s no institutional space devoted expressly to poetry of the refugee experience. Let’s imagine one into existence together, for a day. Join the Smithsonian Asian Pacific American Center and the Asian Arts Initiative, working in partnership with the Association for Asian American Studies, the Critical Refugee Studies Collective, Kundiman, the South Asian American Digital Archive (SAADA), and Temple University Press, to begin the process of dreaming.

You are invited to a One-Day Center for Refugee Poetics, a pre-launch or grand opening of a Center that doesn’t yet exist, with an initial focus on the Southeast Asian refugee diaspora, exploring the arts and refugee experience, poetry and refugee communities, aesthetics and the refugee condition. With Ocean Vuong, Catzie Vilayphonh, Lan Duong, Cathy J. Schlund-Vials, SAADA, Kao Kue, Monica Sok, Cathy Linh Che, Saymoukda Duangphouxay Vongsay, Sham E-Ali Nayeem, Anida Yoeu Ali, Ananya Chatterjea, and Boone Nguyen.

CrRP is part of the Smithsonian Asian Pacific American Center’s 2018 Critical Conversation Series; it is also presented as part of Asian Arts Initiative’s 25th anniversary celebration, May 3-6, 2018.

She Who Has No Master(s) at USAAF 2018 – San Francisco, CA

She Who Has No Master(s), a collective of women and gender-nonconforming writers of the Vietnamese diaspora, presents two collaborative poetry performance events for the United States of Asian America Festival USAAF 2018. Readers include Aimee Phan, Dao Strom, Anh-Hoa Nguyen, Isabelle Thuy Pelaud, Julie Thi Underhill, Stacey Tran, Thao P. Nguyen, Trinh Mai. Our first event is May 5th at the International Hotel, in collaboration with SFSU students, and engaging around themes of how Asian bodies are impacted by the #metoo movement. Our main event will be on May 6th at the Asian Art Museum, with a multi-voiced poetry performance in the morning, followed by individual pop-up readings in the 3rd floor Vietnamese and Southeast Asian art galleries in the afternoon.

USAAF 2018’s theme is Regenerative Community, and the festival is presented by APICC (Asian Pacific Islander Cultural Center): www.apiculturalcenter.org

Event formats will include: presentation of collaborative multi-voiced poetry, followed by individual readings by collective members. Both presentations will be accompanied by mixed-media visual elements.

In claiming that we have “no master” or “masters”, we pay homage to former movements by women of color (the phrase is adapted from writings by Audre Lorde), and we present ourselves as multiple, and multi-voiced, working through various bodies of experience, that also recognize that the long echoes of war, colonialism, exodus, dislocation, traumas inherited and endured, divided identities, and the insidious realities of violence, patriarchy and racism have impacted our bodies in numerous ways. We carry wounds and salves, strengths and vulnerabilities, in these bodies. We come together to share our stories and collaborate new ways of being, acting, empowering. We believe in the power of sharing stories and making nurturing spaces of creativity that encourage presence, visibility, and agency for our community and others like ours.
