AIDEN NGUYỄN

Where are you from?

My name is Khanh “Aiden” Nguyễn and I was born in Gò Dầu, Tây Ninh. I immigrated to the United States with my family when I was 4 years old in 1998 which makes me a generation 1.5 Vietnamese American. I currently reside in Boston, Massachusetts with my family.

Aiden

Tell us something else about yourself.

Instead of talking about myself, I would love to tell everyone more about my art project, Vănguard. Started in the summer of 2014, Vănguard is an underground literary and art zine made by queer Vietnamese people for other queer Vietnamese people. This project is based in Saigon and we work with both local artists living in Vietnam and those in diaspora communities abroad, including myself and one of my partner. Our goal is to create communities, empower queer Vietnamese people and to create a platform for queer visibility in Vietnam. We were recently featured on Saigoneer, you can read more about it here.

We are always looking for more artists and writers to join our community, so please contact us at [email protected] or on our Facebook group.

Finally, I want to give a shout out to all of Vănguard’s amazing contributors: Anh Trần, Đăng Bùi, Đạt Phan (Khỉ), Đinh Công Thành (Thanh Coco), Gùi Nguyễn, Kim Cỏ, Nam Núm,Phước Thái and Thanh Mai.

Do you have a favorite Vietnamese or Vietnamese diasporic work of art? If so, tell us about it.

I am relatively new to the to the Vietnamese diasporic art scene. The first Vietnamese person that truly inspired me was Mimi Thi Nguyen (http://mimithinguyen.com) and their zine, Evolution of a Race Riot. To be honest, Mimi is the inspiration behind the conceptualization of Vănguard. After reading their work, I was motivated to learn more about identity politics and explore what it meant to be queer and Vietnamese.

Currently, I am reading A View from the Bottom: Asian American Masculinity and Sexual Representation by Nguyen Tan Hoang.

Thanks, Aiden!
