Outspoken: Poets of the Diaspora II, featuring Andrew Lam

On April 24th, the Diasporic Vietnamese Artists Network presented “Outspoken: Vietnamese Poets of the Diaspora II” at Fort Mason in San Francisco. Six writers read from their works at this event, with poetry being somewhat loosely defined. This was the second time that DVAN put on this event, with sponsorship from Friends of the San Francisco Public Library.  You can check out photographs of the writers from the first time we did it here (scroll down to the bottom of the page): http://www.dvanonline.org/dvan-events.php

For the second event, the featured writers were Anhvu Buchanan, Andrew Lam, Kim-An Lieberman, Dao Strom, Lan Tran, and Trinh T. Minh-ha. Periodically over the next few weeks, diacCRITICS will post the videos of each of these writers’ performances. The emcee is Viet Nguyen. Keep checking back!

The fifth reader featured (in reverse alphabetical order) is Andrew Lam.

Andrew Lam is the author of the memoir – “Perfume Dreams: Reflections on the Vietnamese Diaspora” (heyday books – 2005) and an editor with New America Media. His next book, “East Eats West: Writing in Two Hemispheres” (Heyday Books – 2010) is due out in the Fall 2010.Lam’s essays have appeared widely in many newspapers and magazines, including The Nation, LA Times, and he has provided some 60 commentaries on All Things Considered. His book of short stories, “Birds of Paradise” is due out in 2011. Besides essays, his short stories are widely published.
